Jane was born in 1821 in Ireland. Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin married in 1844 in Ireland and came to Canada sometime about 1848 with their eldest son James n. 1845 and Ellen who was born in 1847. in Ireland.

After arriving in Canada, they lived in North York (Toronto) on Parliament Street. Thomas was a carpenter and built some of the large buildings in Toronto. This is recorded in the archives at the Parliament buildings in Toronto.

Thomas wrote scale music and played several musical instruments, such as the flute, or fife, violin and drums. One of the flutes is in the possession of a great-grandson.

He was an herbalist and many came to him for help and advice during illness. One of his herbal books is in possession of a granddaughter.

While in Ireland he attended a veterinary college and had one more year to put in before receiving his diploma. For some unknown reason he quit college, so he could not practise professionally, but he did share his knowledge many times to those in need.

After leaving Toronto (the exact date is unknown but it was after 1855), they came to Zion in Ashfield Township. There was a church, a school, a hall (used for Orange Lodge meetings) and a cemetery. The buildings have since been torn down.

Thomas and jane bought a 50 acre farm at Zion on the west 1/2 of east 1/2 Lot 7 concession 12 of Ashfield Township in 1871. They later moved to concession 4, Ashfield west of Dungannon, now (1995) known as "Maple Emblem Farms".

When their son Abraham married Louise Congram this farm was given to him then Thomas and Jane moved to a farm on Crew sideroad. Later on when they couldn't care for themselves, as Thomas had lost his eyesight, the came to live with their son Thomas is West Wawanosh and were there until their deaths. (three years later). Thomas and Jane bought this farm for their son Thomas in 1880.
Thomas passed away June 1913 at the age of 92 and was buried in Dungannon cemetery. Jane passed away in June 1914 at the age of 93 and was also buried in Dungannon cemetery. It was said that Jane came from family with a "Title" to their name. At one time it was known that Jane owned 365 dresses. It was recorded in Thomas's family Bible that his father (no name was given) was born in 1779 and died May 29, 1845 at the age of 66. His mother (no name given) was born in 1781 and died April 12, 1847. Thomas and Jane had 10 grandchildren and 49 grandchildren.
