He was born in Ireland and on his death certificate, his parents are listed as Thomas Culbert and Jane Neil, both of Ireland. He married Jane Martin in 1844 in Ireland and had 10 children. James b.1845 and Ellen b. 1847 were both born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada in 1847/1848 settling at first in the Toronto area. They then had K. George b. 1849, Thomas b. 1855, Abraham George b. 1857 in Ashfield, Annie Matilda (Tillie) b. 1860, Samuel b. 1862, John b. 1864 and Mary Jane born in 1867. He was found in the 1861 - 1911 census as a farmer in Ashfield Township but moved to his son's farm with his wife Jane in West Wawanosh as shown on the 1911 census.
