Robt. Bothern, 46, Scioan Killed in Traffic Pile-Up
While enroute to work at Corvallis Monday morning Robert Bothern, of Scio Rt. 2 Box 185, was killed, apparently instantly when his pickup was in the midst of a six vehicle smash up on Interstate 5 Freeway near Albany, at the Knox Butte road overpass.
Published news reports that day stated that the accident was not caused by fog near industrial smoke. Involved in the crash was first a converted school bus, next a tanker truck, and those were followed by four other vehicles caught in the chain reaction. Time was listed as 7:07 a.m. and it was still dark. The pavement was wet as it had just stopped raining.
Bothern was apparently thrown from his vehicle in the smashup and died of head and chest injuries. One other man was hurt seriously and three other members of his family also hospitalized. The family was from Holbrook, Arizona. Two other persons also were treated at the Albany hospital and later released. One of those was a man from Salem, the other from Tacoma, Wash.
Funeral services for Bothern will be 1 p.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Stayton. The pastor, Norbert Day will officiate. Burial will be at Miller Cemetery northwest of Scio. The Aasum Funeral Home of Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bothern was born Feb. 12, 1923 at Colman, South Dakota. He was married there on Apr. 6, 1946 to Mae A. Clark. He operated a small farm.
The couple moved to Tracy, Calif. in 1956, farming there and later moved to Silver Lake, Oregon where he farmed and also did carpentry.
The family has lived in Scio since 1961. He was employed by Lantz Construction Co. as building foreman for construction of the new Forestry Building at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Marines. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Stayton. He was also member of the Coast Willamette District Council of Union Local 1065.
Surviving are his wife, Mae and two sons, Robert L and Randall R., all of Scio; another son Cpl. Roger J. who is with the Marines at San Diego, Cal.; his mother, Mrs. Anna Bothern, and two sisters, Mrs. H.S. (Elizabeth) Fjelland and Mrs. C.C. (Marion) Casjens also all of Scio; a twin brother Delbert and four other brothers, Herbert, Donald, Henry and Herman all out of state and two granddaughters.
