Katie "Kay" McConnell Smith Willis, 78, of Destin, Fla., and formerly of Memphis, born March 5, 1933, in Hickman, Ky., passed away peacefully at her daughter's Memphis home on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Katie loved life and especially loved her family and friends. During her brief illness, Katie received spiritual guidance from Msgr. Edwin Creary, Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Germantown, Tenn. Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Hester Gray McConnell and Ernest Robert McConnell; her husband of 25 years, Charles Willis; her brothers, Robert Cecil Boyd, James Edward McConnell and Charles Ernest McConnell; and a sister, Jean McConnell Oberste. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Smith Meyers (Robert) of Memphis; her sister, June McConnell Rodgers; and her sister-in-law, Ernestine McConnell; along with nieces and nephews and many friends whom she loved dearly.
After moving to Memphis in 1951, Katie's first job was in the bookkeeping department at Union Planters Bank and she later worked for Gordon's Transport. After she retired she moved to Destin. During her years in Destin, Katie was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Elk's Lodge 2688, and the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion 296. Most recently, she was a member of the Ladies Red Hat Society. She was also a
volunteer at Humana Hospital in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Germantown. A memorial Mass will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. A reception celebrating her life will be held afterwards at the church. Entombment will be in the Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Baptist Trinity Home Health Care and Hospice for the care and support they provided to Katie during her illness. The family would also like to acknowledge the health care provided by Dr. Terrance Reeves and the late Dr. Ronald Causton of Destin for their care and concern during these past months. Katie was also blessed with the following caregivers - Frankie Gregory, Linda Mothershed and Bet Sherer, who were angels during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, Katie's family request memorials be sent to Destin Elks Lodge (850-837-0744); or St. Jude Children's Research, Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
Munford Funeral Home, Millington Chapel, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.
