Benjamin Dirks along with his wife Aganetha Schartner Dirks and their children and other famalies, were among many Mennonite families who didn't come to America in 1874, but rather remained behind in Russia and went on the Great Trek in the mountains of Turkestan, being part of the Claas Epp journey. After 10 years of much hardship they came to America on October 4, 1884 on the SS Fulda and arrived in New York harbor. Benjamin and Aganetha were both born in Karolswalde, on the Ukraine/Russian border.

They settled at Marion Junction, South Dakota with his older brother Heinrich Dirks, and other Dirks cousin families and uncles. Benjamin was the 5th born in Karolswalde, Ukraine/Russian border, to Rev. Heinrich J. and Susanna Dirks. Benjamin was one of 14 siblings. Benjamin and Aganetha Dirks had 11 children together.
