His parents were Rev. Heinrich J. & Susanna Dirks, They immigrated to America in 1874. They left their Karolswalde home on the Ukraine/Russian border and traveled by wagon to the nearest train station, and from there to Hamburg, Germany and then sailed into England. From Liverpool, England they sailed to America on the SS CITY OF LONDON and landed November 18, 1874 in New York harbor and processed through Garden Castle in Battery Park, NEW YORK. The family settled in Rush County, Kansas where in 1885 most of the family perished from typhoid fever. It is believed the family may be buried near La Crosse, or Albert, Kansas

Little is known of Benjamin who died young in Kansas.
Little is known of Maria who also died young in Kansas.
The only child to survive was Peter B. Dirks who later married and settled at Arlington in Washington State.
