Excerpt from the Bartholomew family book written by my late mother, Betty Shirley in 1978-

"Emma Bartholomew was born July 20, 1859, in Granville, Ohio. She moved with her parents to Bow Creek, KS in 1879. She married William Hebrew on September 14, 1887. They farmed in the Bow Creek community before moving to Louisville, KS."

Emma was the first teachers at Mount Lebanon School, which was held in the dugout of Charles and Susan Foote, until the school house was built. Also, she was one of the pioneer Sunday School teachers. At one time, she offered a Bible to any one of her pupils who would attend during the three summer months without missing a Sunday. It was not as easy as it sounds. Some of her pupils had to walk 2 1/2 miles. Only two were able to make the goal. Her nephew, Elbert Bartholomew, was one who received a Bible. Also, Winefred Lowe, met the challenge.

From Elam Bartholomew's diary (Emma's brother) we learn Emma's son Jasper came from Clifton, Kansas to assist Elam on his farm in 1915 and 1916. He and his wife and child were the first occupants of the small house built for hired help.

While their daughters, Alice, Ethel, & Edith were in college, the family lived on a farm near Manhattan, Kansas. After the girls graduated from school, the family moved from Manhattan to a farm near Minneapolis, Kansas on the Solomon River. Since the girls wanted to go into business, William bought a building for them to set up in a millinery shop. However, they were lacking in experience, and this business failed. Then he put a hardward store in the building and later bought an implement store. He had put Gordon Freeman, a son-in-law, in charge of the implement store, and that business failed due to poor management, so he closed the implement and hardware stores. William and Emma took in the baby daughter of Henry Rose, after his wife died. Henry was the brother of Minnie Rose Hebrew who was married to Albert Ross Hebrew - a brother of William's. They raised Dorothy Nee Rose as their own, along with their children. She married a man named Miller and moved to Rosville, Kansas.

Emma had her mother Fanny come and live with her in 1896 until Fanny died at Emma's house in 1907.

Emma & Jasper lived with their daughter Alice in their latter years. Emma died in 1934.
