Elias was born February 17, 1848, in Strasburgh, Pennsylvania. He and his family moved to Licking County, Ohio in 1854. In 1865, they moved to Farmington, Illinois, Elias went west to homestead. The grasshoppers wiped him out, and he returned to Louisville, Kansas.
Elias worked as a clerk in a hardware store, as a miller and a tinsman with his own shop. It burned down.
Elias had a green thumb when it came to gardening. He was also good at keeping records in his journal.
In 1850 Census, Elias was 2 years old living with his parents in Strasburg, Lancastr Co., PA
In 1870 Census, Elias was 22 years old, living in the home of Charles C. Foote as a laborer in their flouring mill.
In 1880 Elias was 32 years old, a hardware clerk and living as a border in the Benton home in Louisville, Pottawatomie Co., KS
August 28, 1881, Elias married Bessie B. Bain in Louisville, Pottawatomie Co., KS
1900 Census:Louisville,Pottawatomie Co., KS Mother-in-Law Alayan Bain lived with the family.

In 1940 Census the family lived in McFarland, Newbury Township, Wabaunsee, Kansas.
Later in life, Theron, Elias' son, and his family moved in with Elias and Elias' unmarried daughter Ethleen, in Louisville, Kansas in 1935. Ethleen died that same year. In 1938, Theron and his family moved to Macfarland, and Elias lived with them there until his own death in 1943.
