Miss Mary Sheran, last surviving member of the pioneer families of Freedom Township, died Friday, Nov 30, at Fairview Hospital, Minneapolis. She had undergone surgery on Nov. 25. She has been hospitalized the greater part of the time since breaking her hip four years ago, and was a patient at the local hospital for several months following the injury. She was 89 years old at the time of her death.

Born in Port Henry, New York, on February 2, 1862, Mary Sheran was the eldest daughter of Peter and Bridget Sheeran. During her early childhood, the family moved to Freedom Township where they continued to make their life-long home.

Miss Sheran received her education in the rural schools of Waseca County and at the Mankato Teachers' College. She began her teaching career at the age of 16 years, a profession which she followed until the death of her sister, Mrs. Frank Adams, New Richland, at which time, she discontinued her work to aid in the rearing of her sister's three children. Two of those children, Imogene and Euphrosene, are now teaching at Chisholm [Minnesota]. The third, Sister Ancina teaches at Rochester.

Miss Sheran's late brothers and sisters were Father William Sheran, Sister Felix, Mrs. Margaret Sanders, Mrs. Frank (Ellen) Adams, Edmund, Agnes, John and Peter [sic.] Sheran.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at the Catholic Church in St. Mary's township. Rev. Henry Russell officiated.

Serving as pallbearers were Timothy Adams, John Linnehan, Ray Farley, Martin Kaiser, Hugh and Maurice Courtney.

Interment was in the family plot in St. Mary's cemetery.
