•John Francis Sheran (June 10, 1877-August 11, 1949 in Orange County, CA, +Westminster Memorial Park) In 1897 John was studying in Mankato. He went on to obtain a law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1903. He married Lillian Mary May about 1903, and they began living in Ipswich, SD that year. When his father Peter died in 1904, John and Lilly attended the funeral in Waseca County. They were still living in Ipswich SD in April of 1910 when the census was taken. With them lived Lilly's 22 year-old sister and only sibling, Nellie T. May, who was a schoolteacher. A 19 year-old servant Margaret Tice was listed as a cook. The Sherans owned a horse and their own home without a mortgage. They had no children at this time.

John and his wife Lillian attended the New Richland funeral of Frank Adams in 1910, traveling from Ipswich, South Dakota. After living in Ipswich, just west of Aberdeen, at least from 1903-1910, they moved to California. John F. and Lilly had a daughter named Rose Marie, born in 1912. Dora Haas (a first cousin of John’s) went to California and helped with Rose Marie as a nanny. From postcards sent to Dora Haas at the John Sheran residence by her sister Grace Haas, we know a few of the addresses of this John and Lilly Sheran family. From Feb 1913, there are 3 postcards addressed to Dora Haas in care of John Sheran in Hollywood CA and Pasadena CA.

He was working as a lawyer. In one postcard to Dora from her sister Grace, a question, "How is Lilly?" was written. (This was my first clue to the name of John's wife.). We have a picture of her wearing her first communion dress at about 8 years of age. Very shakey handwriting on the back reads, "Rose Marie Sheran. I made the dress." My hunch is that this note was written by Rose Marie’s grandmother Bridget Sheran, the accomplished seamstress, who died in 1926. Now we know that Rose Marie is the only bearer of descendants from Peter and Bridget (Mullaney) Sheran.

John F. Sheran was divorced from his first wife Lillian Mary May, who was the mother of Rose Marie.

Research should be done in Orange County, California where John died on August 11, 1949. There would be newspaper clippings about some of John’s legal work.

At the time of her death in 1969, Lillian was living with her only child, Rose Marie and husband Joseph Reilly. Their address was on the death certificate and enabled me to trace the family. The folks who bought the Reilly home (Sue Berry) are friends of Kathleen and still live there in June 2005. My letter reached them and they phoned Kathleen, who called me. I learned from the only surviving daughter of Rose Marie, Kathleen Hemming, that Rose Marie was still alive at age 93 in Pasadena, CA. Her mind and hearing were good, but she could not read print. She suffered from macular degeneration.

The mystery was solved. Bridget and Peter Sheran have living descendants through their youngest child, John, and their only married granddaughter, Rose Marie. The biggest surprise to me, after my long search, was that Rose Marie was still alive. I felt duly rewarded for my efforts.

In July 2004, I found a letter from the St. Paul Catholic Archdiocese written in 1923 after the death of John's brother, Rev. William Sheran in Chicago. The letter was addressed to Mr. Ed Sheran at a Los Angeles office. This was an error, the writer substituting “Ed” for “John”, the lawyer-brother of Rev. William Sheran. However it did offer supporting evidence that a Sheran brother lived in Los Angeles. As far as we know, Ed never left the home place except for schooling in Mankato. Education was a high priority of this family and they had a reputation for being "brainy", according to a cousin, Cecilia Sheeran (daughter of Michael Sheeran). Edmund died on the Minnesota home farm on May 6, 1949 just three months before John F. died in California on August 11. John returned to Minnesota for Ed’s funeral. Their oldest sister Mary was alive at that time, but an invalid, bedridden and cared for by her cousins, Dora and Anna Haas. She lived the longest of the eight children, surviving them all.

When John died on August 11, 1949, only a few months following his brother Edmund’s death, his second wife signed the death certificate, Mary M. Sheran. She was not buried with John in the same cemetery.

We obtained the death certificate of Lillian Mary May Sheran who died in 1969 in California. Lillian Sheran’s only child and daughter, Mrs. Joseph Reilly (Rose Marie) signed her death certificate.
