Magdalena Elfrieda Hartman, daughter of Evangeline Sprado and August Hartmann, was born July 1, 1898 on a farm near Granite, Iowa. She moved to a farm near Valley Springs, South Dakota as a baby. After her marriage to Jacob Schipper in Sioux Falls on April 13, 1920, they farmed in the Valley Springs - Rowena area until moving to Sioux Falls in 1937. She was employed at McKennan Hospital and as a cook at the South Dakota Childrens Home until her retirement in 1962.

Magdalena was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Jacob, Sioux Falls; 3 sons, Harold, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Robert, Filmore, California, Willard, Hurst, Texas; 2 daughters, Mrs. Harley (Eleanor) Atwood, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Henry (Lorraine) Raaen, Renner, South Dakota; 23 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 6 brothers, Henry Hartmann, Brandon, South Dakota, Herbert, Sioux Falls, Charles, Sherman, South Dakota, George, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grover, Larchwood, Iowa, Arthur, Garretson, South Dakota; 4 sisters, Mrs. Henry (Elsie) Coehoorn, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Albert (Anna) Jaeger, Royal, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Lamb, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Clara Irvin Fresno, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Johanna, Marie, Catherine, and 1 brother, William.
