Eleanor Ellen Schipper, daughter of Jacob and Magdelena (Hartman) Schipper, was born August 21, 1921 on a farm near Valley Springs, South Dakota and grew up there. She attended Valley Springs schools before moving with her family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota as a junior in high school. She graduated from Washington High School in 1939.

Eleanor was united in marriage with Harley Atwood in Sibley, Iowa on November 9, 1940. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. In addition to raising her family, she also worked for Sunshine Foods, National Food Store and Valley Cleaners.

Eleanor was a member of East Side Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the DAV Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Harlely; four daughters, Marilyn Engler, Sioux Falls, Doris (Curt) Phillips, Valley Springs, Diana Johnson, Madison, and Linda (Mike) Carmody, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold (Edith) Schipper, North Hollywood, California, Bob (Janice) Schipper, Fillmore, California, and Willard (Irma) Schipper, Lufkin, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lorraine Raaen.
