In 1912 at the age of 5, Allen and his family moved to Minnesota. The family returned to Indiana in 1918 and then decided to go to South Dakota that same year. Allen left home when he was 16 years old and went to South Dakota where he worked on a sheep ranch. He entered the Army Air Corp while living in South Dakota and worked as an airplane mechanic.

Al served in the North African campaign and then in Italy. Allen "Al" moved to Michigan when he was discharged from the service, and attended a trade school where he was certified in body and fender work.
