William VanWinkle
Mr. William VanWinkle, a retired Air Force veteran and missionary, died Friday, December 27, in a Temple hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, at the Marshall and Marshall Chapel in Whitney. Burial was in the Heath Cemetery near Whitney. He was 76.
Mr. VanWinkle was born May 13, 1915 in Whitney, where he graduated from Whitney High School. He earned his Bachelors degree in history from Sam Houston State University and a Master's degree in education from Abilene Christian College. He also earned a Master's degree in administration from North Texas State University.
Mr. VanWinkle married Elizabeth Mann on July 7, 1939. She died in April 1981. A son Robert VanWinkle, died in 1963. Mr. VanWinkle joined the U.S. Air Force in 1941 abd retired as a major in 1960. He also was a Church of Christ missionary in Africa, Israel and the United States. He was a member of the Laguna Park Church of Christ.
Survivors incluse two daughters, Mrs. Ray (Barbara) Vermillion of League City and Mrs. Glenn (Frances) Longley of San Marcos; a son, William (Bill) VanWinkle, Jr. of San Marcos; three sisters, Irys VanWinkle of Hillsboro, Ila Margaret Drake of Austin and Iva Marie Stout of San Antonio; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
