Former Resident Dies in Farm Accident
Mr. Robert R. Bennett, 67, of Rural Sperry, Iowa formerly of La Harpe died about five or five-thirty p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 1978 on his farm, from injuries received while he was bulldozing trees.
Mr. Bennett was born near La Harpe, Illinois on February 2, 1911 the son of William E. and Ruth Anna (Hushaw) Bennett. He received his education locally and on January 26, 1936 he was united in marriage with Mary Jessie Rice at the home of her parents near Disco, Illinois. Mr. Bennett farmed near Aledo, Illinois a few years, then returned to La Harpe - Disco Community where he lived and farmed until two years ago when he moved to the Sperry, Iowa vicinity. For the past several years Mr. Bennett had been employed by the Model Clothing Company in Burlington, Iowa.
Mr. Bennett was a quiet, family man, who devoted his energies to his work, his church and his family. He was a member of the Disco United Methodist Church and memorial has been established in his name to this institution.
He is survived by his wife, one son, James Bennett, Colorado Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Mary Ruth) Rankin, Palof Hills, Illinois, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Floyd (Mary) Duval, Kingston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; three brothers; Clarence, Industry, Illinois; Carl and Clair, rural La Harpe and two sisters Mrs. Kern (Elsie) Clover, Stronghurst and Mrs. Herschel (Vera) Caldwell, Fountain Green. Preceding him in death were one son, Mark on March 12, 1973 and one sister, Verna Huffman.
Services for Robert Bennett were held Friday, September 8, 1978 at 2:00 p.m. in the Banks and Beals Funeral Home, La Harpe, Illinois. The officiating ministers were the Reverend Willard Courtney and the Reverend Paul Smith. Mrs. Lonnie Furrow sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Evening Prayer"; Mrs. Keith Fowler was the organist. Casket bearers were Ronnie McDowell, Wendell Burg, Lowell Blythe, Gilman Foster, Kenneth Foster and Leland Lipper. Interment was in the La Harpe Cemetery.
