Clair W. "Cappie" Bennett, 87, of rural LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
He was born January 27, 1921 in LaHarpe, the son of William and Ruth Hushaw Bennett. On August 31, 1941 he married Nellie Reed in Memphis, Missouri. She died January 11, 1992. On September 19, 1992 he married Ellen Martin in Fountain Green, Illinois.
Mr. Bennett farmed for most of his life in the Fountain Green Township. He had served on the Hancock County Grain Board and the Eagle School Board. He was a member of the Argyle Bible Church of rural Colchester, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen, one son Donald (Kay) Bennett of Springfield, Illinois, four step-sons, Lloyd (Judy) Martin of Colchester, Illinois, Larry (Sandra) Martin of Plymouth, Illinois, Robert (Linda) Martin of Dumas, Texas and Jack (Pat) Martin of Purcell, Oklahoma, two grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, thirteen step-great-grandchilden and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, two sons, Gary and Richard Bennett, one daughter, Judith Ann Bennett, three brothers, Carl, Robert and Clarence Bennett and three sisters, Elsie Clover, Vera Caldwell and Verna Huffman.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Mike Deblois officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial has been established for the Argyle Bible Church.
