Funeral of Mrs. Hammer.
'Funeral services (for the late Mrs. Elizabeth Barnhart Hammer, widow of Joseph. S. Hammer, whose death occurred Thursday at the Memorial hospital, were conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the late residence, 1399 Franklin street, in charge of the Rev. Harry E. Smith, pastor of the Roxbury M. E. church. Mrs. Juan Smith, wife of the Rev. Mr. Smith, sang "Abide "With Me." Burial took place in Grandview cemetery. Four sons and two grandsons of Mrs. Hammer acted as pallbearers. The sons are Charles, Ross, Walter and Harry Hammer and the grandsons are Lester Shaffer and Fred Krise.

Mrs. Hammer's health had been impaired for about two weeks before she was removed to the hospital to undergo an operation for an obstruction of the Intestines.

Elizabeth Barnhart was born near Stoyestown April 8, 1848, a daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth Sell Barnhart. The Barnhart family removed to the Roxbury section in 1864, Mr, Barnhart purchasing 150 acres of ground, part of which is now owned by the city in the Luna park tract. Mrs. Hammer's mother died in this city April 2, 1878, aged 65. Her father's death occurred Dec. 7, 1889, aged 80. Mrs. Hammer's mother was a member of the Roxbury M. E. church. She donated the plot of ground on which the church was constructed more than 60 years ago. Michael Barnhart was a member of the First Lutheran church.

Elizabeth Barnhart was one of three sons and four daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barnhart and was the sixth of this number to pass away. Her surviving sister is Mrs. Sarah Melander of Franklin street. Mrs. Hammer was a sister of the late Mrs. Mary Barclay, Mrs. Elmira Myers, Henry, Isaac and David Barnhart, Henry Barnhart served in the civil war.

Mrs. Hammer is survived by five sons, four daughters,29 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The surviving children are: Mrs. Nettle Shaffer, 1457 Franklin street;
Ella, wife of W. S. Krise, 1288 Franklin street, Pearl, wife of George Baldwin, Plainfleld; Stella, wife of L. Frank Aaron, Bethlehem, Pa.; Dr. C. M. Hammer, 608 Central avenue; S. Rosa Hammer, Plainfield; Harry A. Hammer, Theodore street, Roxbury, and Walter and Ernest Hammer, both at home.

"Mrs. Lizzie Ann Hammer had twins. They are living. Ernest in Florida and Mrs. Stella Aaron on Johns St., Johnstown. Mary Barclay had twins, George and John. John died several months ago [John died in 1948, so Ella Krise's notes were from 1948]. Elmira Myers had triplets, two girls and 1 boy. The boy Lincoln died at the age of nine months. The girls Mrs. Laura Blough and Mrs. Minnie Hochstien lived to be 80. They were born in a log house that was in the center of Luna Park." [Notes from Lizzie Ann's daughter Ella Krise.]

Mrs. Kate Ann Rodgers of Hooversvllle, aged 90, is the only surviving aunt of Mrs. Hammer. A son and four grandsons of Mrs. Hammer served in the world war. Emest W. Hammer was at Camp Lee; George Krise served four years in the navy: Fred Krise, aged 17 at the time of enlistment, joined the army six days after war was declared and served I8 months In France, and Glen Bald win and Paul Baldwin were in American camps.

Miss Barnhart and Joseph S. Hammer were married In Davidsville Nov.10, 1867, by the late Rev. David Stufft. Mr. Hammer was a shoe maker by trade and served as justice of the peace for a period of 15 years. His death occurred Dec. 29,1906, aged 69.

The following out-of-town friends and relatives attended the funeral: Mrs. Elizabeth Gallaher, New Washington, Pa., accompanied by her daughter, Ada Gallaher, Mrs. Gallaher being the mother of Miss Sarah Gallaher of Ebensburg; Mrs. J. E. Shelton, Buffalo, N. Y.; Paul Baldwin and Clarence Gillinger, Piittsburg; Mr. and Mrs. George Krise, Altoona; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fryburg, and Jonathan Boyer, Hooversvllle; Mr.and Mrs. Samuel Hammer, Greensburg, and David Hammer. R. F. Hammer and families, all of Somerset-county. Mrs. Charlotte Livingston of Moxham, aged 86, also attended the funeral.
