16 August 1884, Image 3 (edited):

In last week's issue we announced the death, on Thursday last, of D. L. McFarland through the burning of a building at the mouth of Half-Breed Creek. He had left the headquarters of the Montana Sheep Company, of which he was foreman, and started for Billings, where he expected to meet W. C. Child, of Helena, the president of the company. He arrived at Robinson's store (Roundup postoffice), at the mouth of Half-Breed Creek, about 4 p.m., where he put up for the night. About midnight he wished to retire and was told he could occupy Robinson's bed, who was absent, which was in a log building about ten feet from the saloon, and the only bed in that building. McFarland went to bed, but insisted on leaving a lighted lamp in the bedroom. About daylight others in the camp were awakened by the sound of exploding cartridges, and saw that Robinson's dwelling was on fire, the flames pouring out of the doors and windows. Unable to get into the building, it speedily burned down. The only explanation of the sad event seems to be that McFarland, while asleep, must have knocked over the lamp, and, being a heavy sleeper, had slept on until overcome with the smoke. His remains were brought to Billings on Sunday morning and taken to Helena, where they were interred on Monday. It seems that it was Mr. McFarland's habit to have a light burning in his bedroom, a habit that ultimately cost him his life. Mr. McFarland was widely known and as widely esteemed for his generous qualities and excellent business abilities. He leaves a mother, Mrs. E. T. McFarland, and a sister, the wife of W. C. Child, both of whom reside in Helena, and two brothers, J. H. McFarland, of the Montana Sheep company, and W. T. McFarland, of Maiden. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict of accidental death.
