HATTERAS, N.C. - Millard Fillmore Ballance, Sr., 57, a lifelong resident of Hatteras, died Monday [Oct. 23, 1967] at 11:35 a.m. in his home. He was a retired master mariner of the Army Engineers.

He was the son of Mrs. Lina Styron Ballance and the late Charlie H. Ballance and the husband of Mrs. Nita Baum Ballance.

He was a member of Hatteras Methodist Church, Manteo Masonic Lodge #521, and Khedive Shrine Temple in Norfolk, Va. During World War II he was an army lieutenant colonel.

Besides his widow and mother, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Byrd of Gulfport, Mississippi; a son, Millard F. Ballance, Jr. of Hatters; two sisters: Mrs. Roy Brown of Marshallburg and Mrs. Melvin Basnight of Manteo; a brother, Charlie H. Ballance of Hatteras; and 3 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Hatteras Methodist Church by the Rev. Hobart Burnside.

Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk with rites by Manteo Masonic Lodge. Twiford Funeral Home in Hatteras has charge.
