MRS. WULFJEN DIES AT COLORADO CITY
COLORADO CITY (RNS) ~~ Colorado City's oldest resident and one of its best-loved pioneers, Mrs. James D. Wuljen, 95, died at her home here at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.
She had been ill for five days.
Almost totally blind since young womanhood, she was still active and interested in her town, her family, her church and the Mitchell County Pioneer Association until her last illness.
Each year for the past decade, Mrs. Wulfjen was awarded flowers as the oldest member present at the annual reunion and all-day open-house held by the pioneer association, during Frontier Roundup here.
She had been a member of the Methodist Church since childhood, was a member of the Daughters of the King Sunday School class and was the last surviving member of a Colorado City prayer meeting group. That group, begun by Abe Mulkey, nearly half a century ago, had met for weekly prayer each week for more than 40 years. Often they met in the Wulfjen home, which she shared with one of her daughters, Mrs. Everett Winn.
Mrs. Wulfjen was the widow of one of the first prominent Mitchell County ranchmen and the mother of several widely known ranching sons. Two of her sons, Urde and Sam Wulfjen, died recently. Urde Wulfjen died in September, 1948, and Sam Wulfjen in December, 1949. Both were large scale ranchers, active in church and civic affairs and in the Frontier Roundup Association.
Open house given by her children on her 90th. birthday, December 9, 1944, is still remembered by many Colorado City residents. Hundreds of friends attended. Each of her children read portions of an orginal poem of appreciation for their mother written by a granddaughter and each presented her with a red rose and a kiss at her birthday festival.
Born Mary Jane Cocreham in Somerville, Tennessee, December 9, 1854, she was married to Mr. James Durham Wulfjen in San Marcos February 24, 1874. Her husband at that time was in the mercantile business.
In 1885 the couple moved to Mitchell County, establishing the famous 96 Ranch, 12 miles south of Colorado City. Mr. Wulfjen died in March, 1933.
Mrs. Wulfgen remembered vividly the drought of 1917 where all cattlemen suffered reverses. She had known hardship as an early day ranch wife and prosperity as Wulfjen land holdings expanded.
One son, Bert Wulfjen, Mitchell County rancher, and two daughters, Mrs. Dera Winn, ranchwoman, and Mrs. S. H. Wallis of Tucson, Arizona, survive her. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her Colorado City grandchildren are Francis Winn, James Wulfjen, and Mrs. Felon Harrell.
Funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in the First Methodist Church here. The pastor, the Rev. J. E. Shewbert, will officiate. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Kiker and Son Funeral Home.
