Maria was a daughter of Johann Ulrich Scherer and Maria Dorothea Balle.

She married Christoph Bauer in 1772 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

She was the mother of eleven children:
Abraham, Hannah, Susannah, Anna Maria, Elizabeth, Solomon, Jacob, Maria Esther, Mary Magdalena, Rebecca and Lydia Ann Bauer.
