Samuel Gunn was the fourteen child of maybe as many as seventeen children born to William Henry Ridgely and Hannah Reed (Simmons) Ridgely. He was listed as "idiotic" in the 1860 - 1880 census reports, and he lived with his brother, Lloyd Ridgely. In family records it is said, "Samuel was extremely deficient mentally." Samuel lived a few years after the death of his brother, Lloyd. He was the last surviving member of his generation in this family.
