Don was born on November 28, 1923 to Carl Mayer and Anna Bell (Westwick) Johnson. He was a 1943 graduate of Story City High School. On September 26, 1945, Don was united in marriage to Dott May Heick in Jewell, Iowa. He worked at Baldus Hatchery in Story City until Don went to work for the Ames Lab in 1952, retiring in 1986. He had lived in Story City for 41 years, before moving to Madrid in October 1986.
Don was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He liked to wood carve, which he started as a young boy in Scouts and branched out to become a caricature carver. He had traveled with many shows and belonged to several woodcarving clubs.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Dott of Madrid; children, Michael S. (Sandra) Johnson of Madrid, Rozella (Kenneth) Robinson of Ellsworth, IA, Jonathan (Luana) Johnson of Story City and Kevin (Barbara) Johnson of Ames; sister, June Robertis (Donald) Johnson of Del Mar, CA; brother; Carroll (Jo) Johnson of Panora, IA; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and ten step-great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents; one brother at infancy; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Johnson; and one brother-in-law, Mickey Robertis.
