Carroll Westwick Johnson, a longtime resident of Slater and Lake Panorama, IA, died June 10, 2020 in Guthrie Center, IA at the age of 89. An outdoor funeral service is planned at Nelson Park in Slater on June 24 at 2 pm. Please dress comfortably for this outdoor service. Family will stay after the service to greet friends and family.
He was born on September 30, 1930 to Anna (Westwick) Johnson and Carl M. Johnson in Story City, IA.
Carroll was baptized and confirmed his Christian faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Story City High School in 1948. Carroll attended Waldorf Junior College, where he earned his Associate degree.
He was drafted into the Unites States Army in 1951, serving as a medic at the 196th Field Artillery Aid Station in Korea. He was awarded the U.N. Service Ribbon and the Korean Service Ribbon.
Carroll returned from his service in the Korean War in 1953 and enrolled in the College of Mortuary Science program in St. Louis, MO. During his time there, he met his future wife Mary Jane Prebble. Carroll and Mary Jane were united in marriage on August 29, 1956 at Vinita Park Methodist Church in St. Louis.
After Mary Jane’s graduation from the Washington University School of Nursing, Carroll returned to college at Southwest Missouri State University where he majored in Industrial Education and Physical Education.
Carroll’s teaching career included positions in Hollister and Branson, MO, and at Southeast Polk, Saydel, and Abraham Lincoln High Schools in Iowa. Carroll taught Industrial Arts and Vocational Training and coached cross country and basketball.
Carroll also worked for the Iowa Department of Public Instruction in Veterans Education & Training and in the Childcare and Food Nutrition department before his retirement.
Carroll and Mary Jane moved to Slater in 1961, where they raised their family and celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1996. They were active in their church and community, working with the Slater Park Board to raise funds for Slater’s first swimming pool. They enjoyed their retirement years spending time with family and volunteering at Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp in Story City. They lived in Slater until Mary Jane’s death in 1997.
Carroll was then blessed to meet a second love. He married Jo Juhl on July 11, 1998 and they enjoyed 22 years together. Carroll added Jo’s four sons and their families into his circle of loved ones.
Carroll and Jo divided their time between Sun Lakes, AZ in the winter and Lake Panorama in the summer. In his free time, Carroll enjoyed woodworking, golfing, ping pong and, of course, spending time with children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mary Jane, and three siblings: Don Johnson, June Johnson Robertis, and an infant brother. He is survived by his four children and their families –Susan (Tim) Erickson, Kelsey (Carl) Grulke and their children, Jesse Erickson, and Lynnea (John) Laskowski; David (Teresa) Johnson; Sharon (John) Hernandez and Jenna Hernandez; and Timothy (Trish) and Christopher and Matthew Johnson, his second wife Jo Juhl Johnson, and her children and their families.
