Chokes Herself With a String – The vicinity of Verona was greatly shocked Wednesday when it was learned that Mrs. Cora Grey wife of Mr. Felix Grey had committed suicide. While her daughter was preparing dinner Mrs. Grey went upstairs, presumably to look after some household matter. When dinner was announced she failed to come and an investigation was made and she was found dead by her husband. She had locked the upstairs room door and using a plain cloth string about the size of an ordinary string necktie, looped at one end about her neck, fastened to the other to the bed and choked herself to death. She left no note of explanation, but the deed is supposed to be the result of ill health. She was 44 years of age and a member of the Methodist church. The funeral was conducted yesterday by Rev. T.M. Hendrix, followed by burial at the Liggett graveyard. She leaves two sons, Jackson and Charlie Grey, and one daughter, Miss Lillian Grey, besides a number of relatives among whom are City Marshal John Andrews and Mrs. Will Andrews of this city.

INTERVIEW WITH William Lafayette Andrews, Jr., JULY 2002:

JEA – Tennessee Tucker and William Vaughn Andrews had a daughter Cora Andrews who was married to a Felix Gray.

WLA – That was Martha and Jane Gray's mother and father. Jane was killed when they had a party. She fell off a cliff. Jane didn't have any children. Martha was a little older. Lynara Jane was killed when we were in Knoxville, when I was in law school in Knoxville in 1946. They were having a party down on a bluff over the river, something happened and she slipped and fell – fell on the rocks down below. The Duck River on the way, when you go over the Duck River. She's Cora's Granddaughter. Jack's her father.

JEA - Cora was Nicholas' sister. Did you know her at all?

WLA – I don't remember her. I probably did when I was little.

Cora's grandaughter, Louise Gillespie drove Bill and John Andrews to Nashille every Sunday afternoon and back to Lewisburg every Friday evening during their first year at Father Ryan High School. Bill sat in the front seat with Louise in conversation while John sat quietly in the back. The boys recall hearing her say that she remembered the good old days when blacks would work for $.50 per day. Her nephew, Buddy (Mary's son), was a football star in high school and at Georgia Tech and married President Dwight Eisenhower's grandaughter. Louise never married and lived with her sister Mary during the week and on her family's farm on Highway 431 in Marshall County on weekends.
