Susan moved with her parents to Dade County, Missouri in 1867, after the Civil War that destroyed their farm and property in Benton County, Arkansas.

She married Thomas "Tom" Archibald Maze October 24, 1875 in Dade County. Tom is a son of John Joseph and Susan Hailey Maze.

The mother of eight children, Susan died a month after the birth of Mount Ella "Ed" Maze b.1895 of pneumonia. Her other children are Florence Belle b.1876, John Everett b.1878, Maggie Quarles b.1880, Charles Thomas b.1882, Hailey Powell b.1884, William Robert b.1887, and Jesse Archibald b.1889.

The Greenfield Vidette, March 7, 1895 -- Died -- At her home four miles north of Dadeville, on February 10, 1895, Mrs. Susan Maze.
Mrs. Maze was born in Arkansas April 4, 1858. In 1867 she came with her parents to Dade county, where she has lived since. When sixteen years old she united with the Christian Church and has always lived an earnest and devoted Christian life. In 1874 she was married to TA Maze. She leaves eight children -- six boys and two girls -- the oldest eighteen years of age and the youngest only six weeks.
The life of Mrs. Maze has been spent in the seclusion of the country but her amiable character was known and appreciated by all of her friends. To be acquainted with this estimable lady was to love and respect her. As a faithful and loving wife, filled with a deep sense of her duty to her husband and children, she spent her life at home. There, in the noble sphere of a mother, she busiest herself with the grandest work that can occupy the mind and the hand of woman --- the care and training of her children. She lived to see the careful and conscientious training begin to bear fruit. Her oldest daughter at the age of sixteen united with the church and is following the example of the great Teacher.
By the death of Mrs. Maze the church loses one of its best members, yet it is a consolation to know that such true Christians do not live unto themselves, and that her work will continue to live and influence the lives of others.
The greatest lose is to the sorrowing husband and children, but when they think of her fidelity and goodness they should be comforted, knowing that what is a irreparable loss to them is a great gain to her. She has received the crown of life everlasting. -- M

Daughter Maggie Quarles Maze Slater, 1880- April 30, 1915, died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Los Angeles, California. Maggie first married Virgil Carlock, September 3, 1905, Dade County, MO. Her second husband is John Henry Slater, they married April 28, 1913, Los Angeles, CA.
