Born in Martinsburg. Eldest son of Joseph & Elizabeth Faulkner Sommerville. The family left Martinsburg in 1794 as recounted in the diary of his uncle William. The wagon was so full of family and possessions that John was sent on later. He connected up with the family in Bath where they stayed briefly before moving on to Clarksburg.
John was a merchant of Clarksburg he ran a licensed ordinary and hotel. Later he was a justice.
John was married to Margaretta Robinson on the 3rd of August 1803.
Gov. Barbour appointed John Lieut. Col in the 119th rgmt. of the Virginia militia. In 1825 there was a pension granted for his service in the War of 1812.
From 1814 to 1829 John was a Justice of the Peace. In 1840 the family moved west. John died in Missouri.
