Son of John Sommerville and Elizabeth Alexander. Born in Gransha near Londonderry. Came to America originally with his brother George. They lived in Chambersburg, Pa. Joseph went back to Ireland. He returned to America a second time with his brother William in 1773. Sometime around 1770 Joseph moved to Martinsburg, Va. (then). He was an early landowner in Martinsburg, where he lived for 14 years. His daughter Sarah was born there in 1770. She & Elizabeth were the children of Joseph's 1st marriage. It is not known when this wife died. His son John was the child of his 2nd wife Elizabeth Faulkner. He was born in 1783. Joseph left Martinsburg in 1794. The family stayed briefly in Bath where son Joseph,jr died. The family settled finally in Clarksburg. Joseph and his two elder sons were in the merchantile business. Altogether there were 10 children.

Three of Joseph's brothers and their families ended up lived in Virginia and possibly 1 sister. George stayed in Pennsylvania. The families of brothers George & Alexander were true pioneers and soon migrated west. Brother Thomas did not interact with his brothers much.
Of Joseph's children there is no information regarding Elizabeth, who never married & George. All other children are listed below.

Joseph Sommerville spelled his name Somerville, and Summerville as well, even though his brothers retained the Irish Sommerville.
