Fourth of six children of Karl & Elizabeth Hoffman Witt, she was born in Posen Dist. of Prussia. She emigrated from Bremen to Baltimore on the S.S. Strassburg arriving on 24 May 1884 with her parents and sister.

On 17 Jan 1888 she married William (Wilhelm) Dittberner in Anchor, IL. They farmed around Sibley, Ford Co. IL for a time. then moved their family to Panhandle,TX in 1911 and to Amarillo in 1918.

She had 8 children, 7 of whom lived to adulthood. Caroline and Amanda are buried in Illinois. The others lived and died in Texas. A stillborn infant is not counted in the family records.
