She was born on November 3, 1919, in Langdon, ND, the daughter of Ernest and Ruby (Ford) Schutt. She was raised and educated in Fairmount, ND, and attended Westmar College in Lemars, Iowa. In 1940 to 1941 Eunice started teaching in rural North Dakota in Murray, Iowa
She married Robert Smith on November 26, 1941, in Bethany, MO. After their marrage Eunice and Robert lived in Winston, NC and Big Spring, TX. The couple moved to North Dakota where Robert taught in Hebron and was an administrator in Woodworth, McHenry and Rock Lake. While living in North Dakota, Eunice attended Minot State Teachers College, Minot, ND and the University of Mary, Bismarck, ND. In 1959, she earned her bachelors degree from Westmar College. In the fall of 1958, Eunice started teaching 2nd grade at Edison Elementary School in Minot and later she taught at North Hill School for 16 years retiring in 1974. Robert died on February 21, 1994 in Minot.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; brothers, Donald and Robert Schutt; sister, Agnes Marx; brothers-in-law, Rodger Fergusson, Clyde Marx, Fred Synder; and nephew, Randy Fergeson.
