Staff Sgt. William R. Brown, 29, of Lonaconing, in the Philippines April 20.

Staff Sgt. Brown was the son of Mrs. Sarah Ravenscroft, St. Mary's Terrace, Lonaconing. She learned of her son's death in a letter from another son, Pfc. Allan Junior Ravenscroft, who said that Sgt. Brown had died April 20, the day after he was wounded in action. Pfc. Ravenscroft said that he himself learned of Sgt. Brown's death when he called at the hospital to visit with him after hearing he had been wounded.

A member of the 148th Regiment of the 38th Division, Sgt. Brown had been wounded once before, on January 24 during the fighting on Luzon Island. He was veteran of the Fiji Islands, Bougainville, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal and New Georgia campaigns. He entered the Army in January 1942, and went overseas in May of the same year. His last letter home bore the date of April 15.

Besides his mother and half brother, Pfc. Brown is survived by a sister, Mrs. Irvin Beeman, New Freedom, Pa.; a step-sister, Miss Catherine Ravenscroft, Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, David and John Brown of Lonaconing.
