Louis Graw, Aged Pioneer, Passes Away In Bemidji

Louis Graw, aged pioneer, succumbed early Friday morning at 2 o’clock, June 3rd, at the Bemidji Lutheran Hospital after being hospitalized for the past five weeks. At the time of death he was 86 years, 11 months, and 4 days of age. He had been confined to the hospital the past five weeks but had been gradually failing the past four or five months, although prior to this time he was in general good health, being cheerful and up and around the house and yard. His death was attributed to leakage of the heart and other complications.

Louis Graw was the son of Lars and Maria Goranson and was born in Brunsberg, Sweden on June 40, 1861. He received his schooling and grew to manhood in Brunsberg. In 1881 he came with his parents and brothers and sisters to the U.S. and settled on a farm in Kanabes county.

He was united in marriage to Anna Peterson on June 28, 1881, and to this union five children were born. They resided here until 1902 when in the spring of 1903 in April, they homesteaded on their farm in Cormant township where they lived until 1937. On April 28th of that year Mrs. Graw passed away and after that the deceased made his home with his daughter in Blackduck, Mrs. William Bement for a while.

Louis Graw always took an active part in church, school, and public affairs. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Blackduck and attended the church regularly when able. He also served as member of school and township boards. He made his living farming and as a woods worker in the early days. He will be missed not only by the older folks but the young ones as well as he always took time to greet and talk to all.

His wife, Anna Graw, and three children preceded him in death. An infant daughter, Frieda (1892), Anfred (1910) and Gilbert (1946). He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Mrs. William Bement (Elvira), and Mrs. Charles Powell (Edna) with whom he has made his home for the past three years. Two sisters, Mrs. Ericka Anderson of Minneapolis and Mrs. Charles Olson of Ogilve, and two brothers, Peter Goranson of Saum and Ole Goranson of Mora, Minn. He leaves 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
