Rakowski, Berniece H. 91, of Burlington, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 at the Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin. She was born May 19, 1919 in Elgin, the daughter of Bernard and Odelia (Seyller) Sester. Berniece was a 1937 graduate of Burlington High School. She married James W. Rakowski Sr. on February 27, 1943 at the Santa Ana Army Base near Los Angeles. After the war, they made their home in Burlington for over 62 years. Berniece was devoted to her family, known for being a great cook and talented in ceramics. She was a longtime member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Hampshire. Surviving are his six children, James Jr. (Donna) of Byron, Rev. Joy Baumgartner of Lansing, MI, Randall (Sharon) of Elgin, Janice (Larry) Herrmann and Ronald (Cindy) both of Hampshire, Diane Zimmerman of Oak Park, 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Jeanette Raymond of Sycamore. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jim, on July 18, 2007, two brothers, Walter and Earl Sester, and a sister, Lucille Fox. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 E. Jefferson St., Hampshire with Fr. Joseph Nicolosi officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire with Rosary at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Capital Campaign for St. Charles Borromeo Church.
