John was the son of David & Elizabeth (Shonk) Sheer. He married Rosa Bivens on October 10, 1897. They had 3 sons before Rosa passed away in 1904. She is buried in Dutch Bethel Cemetery, Jefferson Townshhip, Owen County, Indiana. Not long after she died, John took his sons and moved to Iowa. He never remarried.
