Clearey Lattin, Grocer, Dies at Brookside Home

Ill Since November- Funeral Tuesday Afternoon

Cleary Lattin, aged 49, who conducted a grocery store at 511 Brookside avenue, died Saturday, night after an illness which began last November.

Lattin started a little grocery store on $15 capital in the front room of his home in 1929, and with the aid of his wife built up a large and profitable business. As the business grew he was obliged to add to the place where his store was kept. Friends of Lattin say that he always bought for cash. As he grew able to do so, he began to give credit to his friends and neighbors and to men who were out of work he extended help which was greatly appreciated by those to whom he gave it. One neighbor speaking of him said that his helpfulness was done quietly and, beyond those who received it, few ever knew anything about it.

He had a love for music, and having had no musical instruction enjoyed playing the piano and violin by ear. He helped provide the music for many a social gathering where music was required. Members of his family said that so great was his fondness tor music that he would sit up until late in the night sometimes to 2 o'clock In the morning, playing his beloved violin for his own enjoyment. Some attributed the failure of his health to these late sessions at night with his music. Lack of sleep and rest are said to have lowered his resistance to the malady which attacked him and resulted in his untimely death.

Born in Fulton, Mo., Mr. Lattin was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Narva Lattin. Besides his wife, Rose, and a granddaughter, Mary, he leaves his mother, Mrs. Alice Costello, a brother, David Lattin, and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Schmuck and Mrs Blanche Williamson. His father died In Kansas City, Kan., March 4, at the age of 76 and because of the son's serious condition no information of his father's death was given him.

Lattin was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

The body is at the Streeper funeral home in Alton and friends may view it there.

The funeral is set for Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock and services will be conducted by the Rev. F. M. Hedger of Grace Methodist Church. Burial will be in Milton cemetery.
