Lavale Gainey Westbrook is the son of Moses B. Westbrook, Sr. and Edna Gainey Westbrook.

L. Gainey married Abigail Wood in 1826 in Johnston Co., NC. To this union were born these known children: John Sellers, Marshall H., Joseph E., Lavale Gainey, Jr., Moses Marion, Betsy "Betty" Ann and Bryan Allen Westbrook.

Gainey and Abigail moved to Jasper Co., GA, thence to Fayette Co., GA. Gainey was a Justice of the Peace, in Fayette Co., GA, between 1820-1869. Gainey was Sheriff of Fayette Co., GA in 1838-1841.

It is not known where he is buried. His wife was buried in 191871 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, Georgia.
