Velma was born April 5, 1922, in Columbia to Elmer and Pearl Duncan Benton. She married Earnest "Shorty" Bruce on Nov. 22, 1940, in Randolph County. She was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Leon Bruce of New Caney, Texas; two daughters, Doris Hollrah of Omaha, Neb., and Fay Miller of Harrisburg; four brothers, Roy Hamilton of Moberly, Thomas Benton and Junior Benton, both of Mexico, Mo., and Donald Benton; 10 grandchildren, Gale Wren, Kevin Bruce, Greg Bruce, Michael Bruce, Angie Johnson, Monica Hollrah, Derek Hollrah, Sara Hollrah, Chad Hollrah and Marie Bradshaw; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Kenneth Bruce; and two sisters, Helen Irene Henderson and Evelyn Ray.
