U.S. Congressman. Born in Huntsville, Tennessee, he graduated from the University of Tennessee, 1942 and during World War II, served in the United States Army, (1942-45). After the war, he graduated from the Cumberland University Law School in 1947 and was a lawyer in private practice at Knoxville, Tennessee. He was assistant attorney general of Knox County, (1947-56), American Legion Tennessee State Commander in 1954 and Mayor of Knoxville, (1959-65). In 1965, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-ninth Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 69 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was also the father of US Congressman, John James Duncan Jr.
