Rufus Lafayette "Rufe" Fite was the fourth child of Joseph and Sarah "Melia" Fite. He was born in Cass County on March 29, 1871. Mattie Eva "Rus" Williams was the eighth child of George Kearse and Rebecca Shelomith Rushton Williams. They married at his home on November 3, 1895. In the spring of 1904 they purchased 100 acres of the Joseph Burleson survey. They made enough money the first year from cross ties and other timber to pay for the land and build a home. Rufe was so strong he could carry a cross tie on each shoulder to load the wagon. They were members of the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Mason. They raised 11 of their 12 children and three of their sons served in Would War II.
