Joseph came with his parents from North Carolina in 1859. He enlisted in he Civil War in at Linden, Texas in April 1862 and served until Feb. 1864. He was in Co. B. 18th Texas Infantry Ochfiltrees Regiment. On Jan. 10, 1867 Melia and Joe were married. Family tales "Joseph had gone to the Goodson home to call on another of the Goodson daughters, but upon arriving he saw in the kitchen the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, Sarah, who was nursing her young child. Joseph adopted William C. "Bud" and Sarah gave birth to 9 more children before her death in 1866.

Joseph and his brother Marion purchased 100 acres of the Kirkland survey located on Turkey Creek in 1867 and in Jun 1877 Joseph purchased 155 1/2 acres of the G. W. Fulgham survey from H. E. Purdom for 13 good average bales of cotton, each bale to weigh an average of 500 lbs.

Joseph married 2nd Matilda Caroline Carter on Sept. 7, 1886. He died on June 6, 1888. Joseph's will left all his possessions to his wife Matilda Caroline for "raising my younger children, until her death and tend to be sold and equally divided among all the heirs including "William Clay" as equal with the rest. Caroline returned to court in 1889, petitioning the court to relieve her of her responsibility of raising the children and to appoint their uncle Perry W. Goodson as the administrator of the estate. The estate was later sold and divided. Matilda Carole was later remarried.
