Ray B. Wallace, 82, of Portsmouth, VA and formerly of Pasture Branch Community in Duplin County passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010.
Ray leaves behind his beloved wife and companion of 55 years, Frances Wallace; a daughter, Janice Wallace of Portsmouth, VA; three sons, Guy Wallace and wife, Maria, of Portsmouth, Kevin Wallace and wife, Cheryl, of Portsmouth; and Dwayne Wallace and wife, Roberta, of Wallace; a brother, Clifton E. Wallace of Newport; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many close friends.
Born and raised in Pasture Branch, NC, to the late Lula and Benjamin Wallace, he was one of nine children raised in a three bedroom house.
In his early years Ray worked on his family's farm, was an errand boy at age of 12 driving his brother William's Harley Davidson to make deliveries, school bus driver at the age of 15, finally enlisting in the Navy at the age of 17.
After two years in the Navy, Ray enlisted in the Coast Guard and served with distinction for 23 years, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer, W3. After serving in the Coast Guard, Ray put the same passion and dedication in working in real estate. Over the years he was part owner of two local real estate companies, Wallace & Wainwright and National Realty. He retired at the age of 80.
Ray's life was filled with the joy of travel, a great love of family and a devotion to friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Wallace. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon with Pastor Cathy Fanslau officiating. Mr. Wallace will be laid to rest in the Wallace Family Cemetery near Wallace.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 4811 High Street West, Portsmouth, VA 23703.
