Lee Murray, retired Foreign Service Staff Officer, died Tuesday at the Frederick Nursing home after a long illness. Born in Hereford, W. Va., the son of the late Rev. Levi F. and Arrilla Van Gorder Murray, he was educated in schools in Maryland and abroad.
After a brief assignment to the Department of State, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War I, Subsequently joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Murray was assigned to Tokyo, Peking , Moscow and Paris prior to the German occupation, at which time the Embassy Staff were held in detention in Baden-Baden.
Reassigned to London after World War II, he served as an attache' to the U.S. Embassy and before his retirement was appointed Vice-Consul in Le Havre. During his entire career as a Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Murray served a total of 42 years in posts home and abroad. His wife, the former Ruth Sutton Kirker, whom he married in China in 1934 , died in 1950.
Mr. Murray is survived by a daughter, Miss Gail Murray of Cambridge, Mass., and a brother, Roscoe Murray of Frederick.
Private funeral services will be held at the M. R. Etchison & Son Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Private interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family requested that flowers be omitted.
