Born in the village of Mierzwin near Topczewo, Poland (under Russia at the time), he was forced to serve 12 years in the Russian Czar's Army as the oldest son in the family. After this time he came to the U.S. in 1889. He worked in the factories of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and married there Katarzyna Kolek. Their first daughter was born there and two more children in Suffield, CT, before they came to Wisconsin in 1897, having bought land there sight unseen in Lehigh, Barron County. A total of 13 children were born to them. Katarzyna is buried in Assumption Cemetery in Strickland, Rusk County, WI.
