Sophie was born in Lehigh, Barron County, WI, on the family farm where her Polish parents, Wladyslaw & Katarzyna (Kolek) Zawadzki settled in 1897. There were 13 children born to them.

On May 25, 1920 Sophie married George Washington Mewhorter at Holy Cross Church in Minneapolis, MN. They had five children: Lawrence George, Richard Henry, Frederic Joseph, Henry John (known as Jack), and Margaret Ann.
