Son of Rebecca Marchant and James Stewart, Jr. He was born in Beargrass, Kentucky Co.,VA. (now Jefferson Co., KY.) Marchant's occupation was that of gunsmith. From a letter written by his nephew, James Hervey Stewart, son of Stephen, he states that Marchant lived several years after his marriage near the old homestead on Harrods Creek (about 14 miles above Louisville) then afterwards he removed to Middletown. About the year 1820 he removed about 2 miles below the mouth of Salt River where he remained until about the year 1830. He then removed to Louisville. He was appointed administrator of his father's estate on Feb. 14, 1814. He and his wife are buried in Eastern cemetery according to genealogy book published in 1915 by Jennie Murray Stewart and also family Bible records. Another descendant of Marchant's copied the inscriptions from the gravestones in 1963. I went to Eastern Cemetery on March 28, 1997 and walked the cemetery, but could not find their stones. The office was unable to give me locations and the cemetery was in really bad shape. No plots of the cemetery were available; they showed me boxes of loose papers that were scattered around the office that they were going through since the city had taken over due to misuse and reburials. Marchant died of Stricture and congestion of the brain - 3 days illness (from family Bible record). Researched and written by Laura J. Stewart.
