In 1755 Rebecca Marchant was living in Berkeley Co.,WV., then Frederick Co.,VA. when Col. Braddock's Troop passed the Opeckon Creek and the drains of Mill Creek on her father's land. She was seven when she heard the guns of Braddock's defeat. After her husband died in 1812 she went to live with her daughter, Rebecca Akin. Her death has been given as July 15,1815 in some publications but according to three different family Bible records of her children (of which I have their youngest son, Isaac's family Bible)the correct date should be July 15,1829. Jennie Murray Stewart had her date correct in her composition notebook (I traced lines down and found the descendant that had her notebook), but in her 23 page pamphlet written in 1915 she wrote 1815. I think she just mistyped having the number 15 on her mind, since Rebecca died July 15. So many genealogists have quoted her on the date, so there are lots of publications with the wrong date, including DAR & SAR applications. Mother of William, James, John, Priscilla, David, Anna, Rebecca, Marchant, Stephen, Elizabeth, and Isaac. She was daughter of William Marchant (1725-1772) Her father's will was the first recorded in Berkeley Co.,WV.(Martinsburg) when it became a new Co. in 1772 when it was laid off from Frederick Co.,VA. The will was probated in Berkeley Co.,WV.,June 18,1772. Appraisal was done 8-18-1772 Berkeley Co.,WV. Her mother was Priscilla Elizabeth Brooks (1731-1787). Researched and written by Laura J. Stewart.

Originally published in my book " The Descendants of James Stewart, Jr. 1743-1812" by Laura Stewart Civey 1998, last revision 2005. (I am going by my maiden name now, Laura J. Stewart)
