He had been sick since the Tuesday preceding but his death was not expected.
He served in the Union army during the Civil War and drew a $24 pension on account of disabilities.
A good many years ago he met with an accident while working at an old fashioned cider press which resulted in the loss of an arm below the elbow. This handicapped him somewhat but he continued to work as he could until old age and the ailments incident hereto disabled him.
Some months before his death, he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Hiram Wink, and his wife made her home with her daughter Mrs. Charles Bard.
He leaves besides the widow, who was Miss Elizabeth Hollenshead, the following children, namely; Michael W. Mellott, Susan, wife of Charles Bard all of Belfast township; and Mary, wife of George Nebraska Garland, of Finleyville, Pa., and James Mellott in Ohio. He also leaves a brother William living in the west.
He was for years a member of the Baptist church and his remains were laid in the Sideling Hill Baptist cemetery on Wednesday, Elder Funk officiating.
