Everyone should know this postman. He is Joseph J. Volz, of 401 East Laurel Street, and a veteran.
Veteran Mailman Entered Postal Service in May, 1894.
Joseph J. Volz, 401 East Laurel street, is the oldest postman wth a route in the San Antonio postal service. Coming into the mail service before the advent of civil service, there is no way of knowing exaxtly when he started working for Uncle Sam, though Volz remembers that he entered the railway mail service during Cleveland's first administration.
He became a carrier in May, 1894, serving as substitue carrier for four years, when he was made the regular carrier, serving the residents of Government Hill, for 30 years, and I've al-ways regretted losing it, he said. "It was mighty lucky."
He is now serving residents of lower Highland Park, Bonnie Bene, and Cedar Crest addition, as carrier 127. He covers his route of about six miles twice a day. The route includes the following.
The twenty-first to twenty-third hundred blocks South Hackberry Street; 100 to 500 blocks, Grant Avenue; 1200 and 1300 blocks Schley avenue; first five blocks of Bailey avenue; 1100, 1200, and 1300 blocks. McKinley avenue; 1300 block Hicks Avenue; 400 and 500 blocks Steves avenue; 400 and 500 blocks Vanderbilt avenue, and the 500 blocks of boit Greer and Higgins Streets.
