HAMPTON - Mr. John Lynwood Absher Sr., 76, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 16, 2011, after a brave battle with congestive heart failure.
He was born in Eckman, W.Va., on Nov. 30, 1934, to the late Snora Susan and Albert Blair Absher Sr.
He served in the United States Marine Corps beginning in 1954. Afterwards he started his career as a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1960. After 11 years, he moved on to Liebherr America where he stayed for 21 years. He then worked at Tatum Ornamental Ironworks until his retirement. He loved to spend time hunting and fishing with his three sons. He was a member of Lafayette Gun Club since 1968.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Spinella and Susan Sizemore.
Mr. Absher is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Annette Fay Absher; brother, Albert Blair Absher Jr.; three children, John Absher Jr. and wife, Debbie, James Absher and wife, Anna, and Jeffery Absher; granddaughters, Kelly Johnson, Jamie Absher and Linda Absher; grandsons, Jeffery Absher Jr. and Nicholas F. Hughes; great-granddaughter, Rowan Johnson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He will be missed by all for his gentle, loving manner.
A graveside service, conducted by Pastor Buddy Chapman, will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in Peninsula Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Peninsula Funeral Home.
