He was born in Cumberland, Wis., and came to Muncie as a child with his parents, Sylvester and Alice Fairbanks Doolittle. He attended Garfield Elementary School.
Mr. Doolittle retired as a salesman in the hardware department at Ross Corner in 1965, and earlier for 20 years, was superintendent of ground maintenance at Ball State University. He was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church, Delaware Lodge F&AM, and a former member of Carpenters Local 1016.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Erwin (Barbara) Mueller, Muncie; five sons, Kenneth and Donald Doolittle, both of Muncie, Sylvester, Artesia, N.M., John, Houston, and Fred, Port Charlotte, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Rita Waechter, Muncie; two brothers, Earl Doolittle, Muncie, and George Doolittle, Jackson, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Alice Corrello, Lima, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His wife, Bessie Doolittle, died in 1976.
Services will be held at Meeks Mortuary at 11:30 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Martin Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and any time before services Monday.
